Justin's Yard & Garden completed a residential landscape cleanup and mulch refresh in the McLean West area of McLean, Virginia. Unwanted growth and debris were cleared from the established island bed, retained plants were selectively cleaned up, and black mulch was installed over the prepared bed for a more defined and maintained appearance.
The Challenge
The large island bed contained scattered weeds, unwanted growth and aging natural bark mulch around the established shrubs and flowering plants. The uneven bed surface and encroaching growth reduced the bed's definition and made the landscape appear less orderly from the street.
Assessment
The established shrubs and flowering plants still provided useful structure and did not require a complete redesign. The appropriate scope was to retain the viable plants, remove unwanted growth and debris, selectively clean up the shrubs, restore the visible bed boundary and refresh the aging natural bark surface with black mulch.
What We Did
- Removed weeds, unwanted growth and loose debris from the island bed
- Worked around and retained the established shrubs and flowering plants
- Selectively cleaned up and pruned plants included within the project scope
- Removed nonviable or unwanted plant material included within the approved cleanup scope
- Re-established the visible bed boundary for a more defined edge
- Prepared the existing large-bark mulch surface for the refresh
- Installed black mulch across the exposed bed areas
- Completed a final cleanup along the adjoining sidewalk and driveway
The Result
The island bed gained a cleaner, more defined appearance with the established plants retained, unwanted growth removed and fresh black mulch providing stronger contrast across the landscape.
Project Note
The project focused on cleanup, selective plant care and improvement of the existing bed surface rather than a complete landscape redesign. Natural plant variation and established mature growth were retained.
